Massive Shrinkage of Australia 189/190 Independent Skilled Migration: Medical and Education Backgrounds Become the Only Winners

Massive Shrinkage of Australia 189/190 Independent Skilled Migration: Medical and Education Backgrounds Become the Only Winners

Australia Skilled Migration: From "Massive Easing" to an "Epic Winter"

After experiencing a massive post-pandemic easing dividend period two years ago where "nurses with 65 points and accountants with 80 points could also be invited," the Australian federal government drastically cut the quotas for Subclass 189 (Independent) and 190 (State Sponsored) visas in the new financial year. For the hundreds of thousands of international students waiting bitterly for an invitation onshore, this is undoubtedly a bolt from the blue.

The Immigration Department's Trump Card: Targeted Draws

Currently, Australia's Expression of Interest (EOI) point system has rolled to an irrational height:

  • Traditional Business and Arts (e.g., Accounting, Finance): Even if you use every trick in the book to scrape together 95 or even 100 points, you face the despairing situation of not receiving a single invitation letter for a whole year.
  • IT and General Engineering: They have also become disaster zones. Not only are the points rising, but major state sponsorships also place more emphasis on the applicant's years of work experience and employer background.

The only winners left are Medical and Nursing (nurses, physiotherapists, social workers) and Early Childhood Education. These two sectors still enjoy ultra-low point dividends and often get fast-tracked invitations by just stepping on the minimum passing mark.

Shattered Big City Dreams, Regional 491 Visa Becomes the Only Lifeline

The Subclass 190 visa quotas for the three major cities—Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane—have dried up. The federal government is forcing new immigrants to flow into Regional Areas.

The Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa not only comes with a massive 15-point bonus, but more importantly, its quota is relatively sufficient. However, getting a 491 visa only grants you a temporary residency for up to 5 years. To transition to the 191 Permanent Residency, the applicant must genuinely live and work in designated regional areas for a full 3 years.

Practical Advice: Stop desperately trying to score 8 in all bands for language exams (like IELTS) or get a NAATI translation certificate! If your occupation is not on the medical or education list, immediately move to a regional area (such as Adelaide, Perth, Hobart), find a genuine job strongly related to your nominated occupation, and use employer resources to leverage the state sponsorship's priority selection mechanism. This is the only way to break through.
