The Post-Study Work (PSW) Visa's Return and the Broader Trend of Staying in the UK

The Post-Study Work (PSW) Visa's Return and the Broader Trend of Staying in the UK

From UK Study to Permanent Residency: The Guillotine After 2 Years of PSW

To salvage international student enrollment numbers post-Brexit, the UK government generously reinstated the PSW Visa (now rebranded as the Graduate Route). As long as you graduate from a recognized UK university, the government simply hands you a 2-year (3 years for PhDs) unconditional work visa. You can spend these two years randomly job hunting, waiting tables, or even remaining unemployed.

Suddenly, rhetoric claiming 'immigrating to the UK has become easy' flooded the market. However, the data reveals a profoundly bloody reality.

The Abyss Two Years Later: How to Secure Employer Sponsorship (Skilled Worker Visa)?

The time spent on the PSW visa itself does not count towards the period required for Permanent Residency (PR). The sole purpose of these 2 years is to give you enough time to hunt down a legal employer willing to issue you a **Skilled Worker Visa**. Only after securing the work visa and working continuously for 5 years can you attain UK Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

But when the 2-year PSW expires, international students face an intensely severe reckoning:

  • Surging Salary Thresholds: The Home Office recently drastically raised the minimum salary threshold for the Skilled Worker Visa to £38,700. For business or media students just two years out of university, this is an almost untouchable figure even in London (unless you are an engineer at a top-tier investment bank or tech giant).
  • Employer Qualification Limits: You cannot just find a random small company to sponsor you. The enterprise must apply to the Home Office, possess a Sponsor License, and pay an exorbitant Immigration Skills Charge. Many employers will outright eliminate you during the interview phase the moment they hear you require visa sponsorship.

The True Retention Rate for International Students is Under 5%

A massive number of international students blindly enjoy life during their first year of PSW, frantically blast out resumes in the second year, despairingly realize no company is willing to sponsor them, and ultimately buy a ticket home on the final day of their visa's validity. This is exactly why the green card conversion rate for UK international students perpetually hovers in the single digits.

Legal Recommendation: If your ultimate goal is to remain in the UK and secure a green card, do not pin your hopes on the illusory PSW. The most secure strategy is: fight tooth and nail during your university years for internships to secure a tech giant's Graduate Scheme; or, upon graduation, have your family fund your equity in a UK startup with VC potential, switching your status to the 'Innovator Founder Visa'. Otherwise, treat the UK purely as an educational finishing school, and turn to Canada for immigration.
