Hong Kong Student Visa: Can You Work on a Student Visa?

Whether you can work on a Hong Kong student visa depends on your course nature and student status. Eligible full-time non-local undergraduate and postgraduate students can currently work in Hong Kong under specific periods, but not all student visas automatically grant the same arrangement. Transitioning to statuses like IANG is required for post-graduation employment.

Many individuals planning to study in Hong Kong often search: Can you work on a Hong Kong student visa?
Especially applicants planning to establish residency through Hong Kong higher education care about whether they can work part-time during their studies, remain in Hong Kong for work after graduation, and seamlessly transition this educational experience into a Hong Kong residency status.
According to current Hong Kong policies, the answer is not a simple "yes" or "no". Instead, it depends on the specific course you are taking, whether you qualify as an eligible non-local student, and the conditions of stay issued by the Immigration Department.

1. Which Hong Kong Students Are Allowed to Work?

According to the current regulations of the Hong Kong Immigration Department, non-local students enrolled in full-time, locally-accredited local undergraduate or postgraduate programmes with a study period of not less than one academic year may be temporarily exempted from employment restrictions under qualifying conditions. Exchange students are excluded (immd.gov.hk).
Eligible students typically receive a "No Objection Letter" (NOL) issued by the Immigration Department, which outlines the categories of work permitted and the relevant conditions.
Under the current arrangements, qualified non-local undergraduate and postgraduate students can work in Hong Kong during their permitted stay or within the validity period stated in the NOL, whichever is shorter (immd.gov.hk).
Therefore, you cannot assume you have the freedom to work simply because you hold a Hong Kong student visa.

2. Are There Time Restrictions for Part-Time Work?

Current policies have relaxed significantly compared to the past.
The Hong Kong government temporarily lifted part-time work restrictions for eligible full-time non-local postgraduate students starting in November 2023, and extended this arrangement to eligible full-time non-local undergraduate students starting in November 2024. Under these temporary exemption arrangements, qualifying student part-time jobs currently have no work-hour or work-location restrictions (immd.gov.hk).
However, applicants must still verify whether their specific course and NOL comply with these requirements.
For example, short-term courses, exchange programmes, and courses outside the scope of this policy do not automatically fall under the undergraduate and postgraduate work arrangements.
Therefore, if you wish to balance studies and work when choosing a study program in Hong Kong, the nature of the course itself is crucial.

3. Student Status Is Not the Same as Employment Status

The primary purpose of a Hong Kong student visa remains studying.
Even if policies allow eligible students to work during their studies, it does not mean student status converts into a work visa, nor does it guarantee the right to continuously work in Hong Kong using a student visa after graduation.
If a course finishes, the original study arrangement also changes. If a school or student terminates a course early, the educational institution must notify the Immigration Department as required (immd.gov.hk).
Therefore, if your goal is not merely obtaining a degree, but staying in Hong Kong to work, advance your career, or plan for permanent residency, you must consider post-graduation status transitions in advance.

4. How to Continue Working in Hong Kong After Graduation?

Eligible non-local graduates can continue their development in Hong Kong through the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG).
Non-local students who have studied full-time in locally-accredited programmes in Hong Kong and obtained a bachelor's degree or higher are classified as non-local fresh graduates if they apply for IANG within six months of their graduation date. They do not need to secure a Hong Kong job offer at the time of application (immd.gov.hk).
If applying more than six months after graduation, applicants are generally required to have already secured a job offer in Hong Kong at a level commonly held by degree holders, with a market-competitive salary (immd.gov.hk).
Therefore, planning residency through Hong Kong studies requires viewing it as a complete pathway:
Student Visa → Complete Course → IANG → Hong Kong Employment or Entrepreneurship → Subsequent Visa Renewals → Long-term Residency Planning.

5. Family Applications Require Long-Term Planning

Many applicants considering higher education in Hong Kong are married with children, aiming not only to study themselves but also to support their children's education and family residency.
In such cases, course selection cannot focus solely on "ease of graduation" or "convenience of class schedules." Families must evaluate whether the course meets student visa and subsequent IANG requirements, how spouses and children will be accommodated, and whether there is a realistic post-graduation employment or entrepreneurship plan.
If the entire family desires long-term development in Hong Kong, studying is merely one phase of the journey.
